Like so many of the most successful fitness industry entrepreneurs, Pete Higgins began his legacy at a young age with a deep seated passion for fitness. Through middle school and into high school Pete became enthralled by the community and competitive nature of school sports. As he found himself more regularly in the gym, at sports games, and taking leading roles on his sports teams, Pete made a decision for his future. He decided to put everything he has into his one true passion, fitness.
After making a name for himself in high school, Pete was accepted to Millersville University to pursue a degree in Education and Physical Fitness. While in college Pete hoped he could make a difference in the fitness world, helping create successful facilities where communities would come together to realize a happier and healthier lifestyle. And after graduating he wasted no time making his dream a reality.
Just one year out of college Pete co-founded the Pineapple Fitness Center in New York City and paved the way for success by selling over $600,000 of memberships and services within 45 days. For the next 6 years he acted as General Manager and worked hard to build Pineapple Fitness Center into one of Manhattan’s leading health and fitness facilities. After a profitable six year run Pete decided to sell his share in Pineapple Fitness and move closer to his hometown of Philadelphia where he could settle down and start a fitness facility of his own.
With seed money from his first successful fitness business Pete founded Workout Plus, a 20,000 sq.ft. state-of-the-art fitness complex in Quakertown, PA featuring exercise equipment, lap pool, sauna, hot tubs, aerobic classes, and personal training. As his membership grew to over 3,600 patrons, he decided to expand his business by opening two more facilities, one in Harrisburg, PA and one in Easton, PA. He then focused on driving profitability through the roof by integrating chiropractic, physical therapy, massage, and reflexology into each of his facilities.
After almost 25 years of managing three wildly successful health and fitness centers, Pete decided it was time for him to move on. This is precisely when he faced his biggest challenge yet. After building a fitness empire, Pete was now faced with selling his baby and doing so without losing any value. He realize that selling a fitness facility presents a number of challenges. He knew that if he wanted his business to retain value he could not simply put a “for sale” sign on his door or he risked losing memberships or employees. He also knew that had some choices to make, whether he wanted to sell the business and real estate as a whole or separately.
It took almost a year for Pete to button up all of the details of his sale but afterwards he walked out with a smooth transition and a value exceeding what he had originally predicted. His three fitness facilities were sold individually without any loss of memberships and while retaining all employees.
Since selling his business Pete has realized there is a true need for fitness consulting in the marketplace. Today more than ever the fitness industry is booming and expanding. Each and every day you see a new health club, yoga center, crossfit gym, or other facility of the like. But unfortunately many of these fitness facility owners are going into the game without experience or knowledge about what the path to a successful fitness business entails. Pete has made it his new mission to help these present and future fitness business owners create a game plan to success so they can live their passion and profit from it too!
